DK Shivakumar Mandates State Flag Hoisting On Karnataka Day, Stresses 'Kannada Should Be Respected'

November 1 is significant as it commemorates Karnataka Rajyotsava, which signifies the establishment of the state in 1956.

In a move to promote the Kannada language and state pride, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has directed all institutions, companies, and educational centers across the state to hoist the Karnataka flag on November 1, in celebration of Karnataka Rajyotsava. The day marks the formation of the state, and Shivakumar emphasised the importance of respecting the Kannada language and the state’s cultural heritage.

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "November 1 is important for Karnataka. It (Karnataka Rajyotsava) is a State day that we celebrate. As a Bengaluru Development Minister, I am ordering all companies, and education centres to hoist the Karnataka flag. 50% of the people are from outside the state. It is important for us to celebrate such a day. Kannada language should be respected. Karnataka flag should be mandatorily hoisted on the buildings on Nov 1."

He highlighted the importance of unity and urged pro-Kannada groups not to take the law into their own hands but to ensure peaceful celebrations.

The Deputy CM also called on institutions, factories, and educational establishments to organize cultural programs as part of the celebrations. Shivakumar warned that strict measures would be enforced to guarantee compliance with the government’s directive.

This initiative underscores the state's efforts to preserve and promote Kannada culture and identity amid growing cosmopolitanism, particularly in Bengaluru.

Karnataka Rajyotsava is celebrated as a public holiday every year on November 1 in Karnataka. This day commemorates the formation of the state in 1956, when the Kannada-speaking regions of southern India were amalgamated under the States Reorganisation Act.
