The incident, which took place on the night of 21 April, reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between the woman and Khan, according to officers from the Jind City Police Station, where the FIR was lodged. The group of four had allegedly been drinking near the woman’s shanty in Jind’s Tapriwas Colony.
The woman, a ragpicker, whose husband was away that night, got into a confrontation with the group. Police said that after she allegedly used a derogatory term for Khan, he, in a fit of rage, dragged her by the hair to a garbage dump near the railway tracks. Hearing her mother’s screams, the woman’s daughter followed them.
The police added that the child was reportedly trapped by the accused in a blanket. Later, Khan raped the woman, while other were involved in assaulting the daughter. When the child struggled and screamed, Shiva and the other two reportedly pressed her mouth and neck, resulting in her death.
