Intense Summer Heat Scorches Jammu, Mercury Soars Above 40°C for Third Day In Row

Jammu weather: Jammu sizzles as temperatures cross 43°C for the third day. IMD forecasts early monsoon relief by mid-June. Heatwave forces school closures and health advisories across the region.

Jammu & Kashmir Weather News: Jammu is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring for the third consecutive day. On Sunday, June 8, the mercury in Samba district hit a blistering 43.9°C, making it the hottest location in the entire region.

Jammu city wasn't far behind, recording a sweltering 42.7°C. According to PTI, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that hot, dry winds have made life extremely difficult, forcing residents to stay indoors during the day.

Pilgrimage Routes Hit

Even the sacred town of Katra, a key starting point for devotees heading to the Vaishno Devi shrine, wasn't spared. Temperatures there reached 38.2°C. In Reasi, it climbed to 38.5°C, while Ramban saw the mercury touch 40.3°C.

Kathua, often referred to as the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a peak of 41.2°C. The summer heat extended all the way to the Valley, with Srinagar registering a relatively high 31.9°C—unusually warm for the region.

Monsoon May Arrive Early, IMD Hints At Relief

There may be some respite on the horizon. The IMD has forecast an early arrival of the southwest monsoon, potentially by the third week of June—about a week ahead of schedule. Pre-monsoon showers are expected around June 20 and 21 in the Jammu region, which could finally bring some relief from the searing heat.

Heatwave Disrupts  Ops, Advisories Issued

The heat isn't just uncomfortable; it's disrupting daily life. In Bhaderwah, the temperature hit 31.8°C, while Batote and Banihal recorded 32.3°C and 32.5°C, respectively. Rajouri baked at 35.9°C, Poonch at 35.4°C, and Kishtwar saw 30.9°C.

In response, several schools have declared early summer holidays. Meanwhile, the health department has issued guidelines urging people to avoid the sun during peak hours, stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heatstroke.
