Internet Suspended, Curfew Imposed As Fresh Violence Breaks Out In Manipur

The government has also imposed a curfew in Bishnupur and enacted prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts.

Manipur authorities have suspended mobile internet and data services in key valley districts for five days starting June 7 in response to fresh violence and growing unrest. The government has also imposed a curfew in Bishnupur and enacted prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts.

According to a late-night update from Manipur Police on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the measures were put in place after multiple reports of violent protests and confrontations with security personnel across the Imphal valley.

The order issued by the state's Commissioner and Home Secretary pointed to the potential misuse of social media platforms by “anti-social elements” who might circulate inflammatory content, including hate speech and videos, that could spark further unrest. The suspension, the order stated, was a necessary step to prevent "loss of life and/or damage to public/private property" and to maintain communal harmony and public tranquillity.

Mob Storms Police Outpost Over Arrests

Violence erupted after news spread that five members of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, including one of its commanders, were detained by authorities. In retaliation, an agitated crowd stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West on Saturday evening, demanding the immediate release of the detained individuals.

Security forces resorted to firing multiple rounds in an attempt to disperse the gathering. During the clashes, at least three individuals were injured, including two journalists who were covering the incident.

With the situation on edge, police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas. The government has urged residents to stay indoors and avoid spreading unverified information.
