In the category of 3-10 lakh population, Noida emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore.
Led by Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma, Indore’s delegation at the awards ceremony highlighted the city’s enduring commitment to cleanliness and civic innovation. Since 2017, Indore has steadily built a reputation as a national model for citizen-driven sanitation reforms.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously praised the city, stating that Indore is often ahead of the curve, implementing critical reforms even before others begin deliberating them.
The city’s sustained success is credited to strong public participation, effective waste segregation, smart waste management systems, and seamless coordination between residents and the municipal administration.
This year’s survey introduced a significant change in assessment methodology; cities were divided into five population-based categories: very small, small, medium, big, and million-plus. This restructuring allowed for more equitable evaluation and saw towns like Ujjain and Budhni also earn recognition in their respective population groups.
Cities such as Panchgani, Saswad, Tirupati, Noida, and Navi Mumbai were also evaluated alongside similar peers, ensuring fair competition across scales.
Over 14 crore citizens participated in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 through surveys, mobile apps, and social media, cementing the initiative’s place as the largest urban cleanliness assessment globally.
This year, the awards were distributed across four broad sections.
- Super Swachh League Cities: Top three clean cities in each of the five population categories,
- Special Categories: Recognising Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha initiatives, and the Mahakumbh
- State-Level Awards: Honouring the most promising clean city from each State and Union Territory
