Kolkata Police Constitute 9-Member SIT To Probe IIM Calcutta 'Rape' Case

A woman alleged she was drugged and raped inside the boys hostel at IIM-Calcutta campus on Friday.

The Kolkata police have formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged rape of a woman at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campus in the city.

The police said on Saturday that a woman was allegedly raped by a student inside a hostel on the campus of one of the top management schools in the country.

The accused was arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman at Haridevpur police station, they said. The alleged incident took place on Friday, according to a police officer.

The woman was called to the hostel for a counselling session, where she became unconscious after consuming a drink laced with drugs, said the police officer, citing the FIR.

The woman realised she had been raped after regaining consciousness, he added.

However, later in the day, a shocking twist came in the case when the woman's father denied rape allegations, saying his daughter had met with an accident and suffered injuries.

“I received a call from my daughter around 9.40 pm on Friday. She told me she had fallen from a vehicle, lost consciousness and suffered injuries. Later, I came to know she was admitted to SSKM Hospital. Nothing of the sort that the police are claiming happened, based on the details I received from my daughter,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Kolkata court has remanded the arrested accused to police custody till July 19. The police remand was granted by the additional chief judicial magistrate at the Alipore court after hearing both parties.

The lawyer representing the student has claimed before the court that the IIM-Calcutta situated at Joka on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, is a secure place with restricted entry, asserting that there was something amiss in the accusation.

Further investigation into the incident is underway, the police said.
