Horse 'Caught' For Smuggling Alcohol In Bihar's Bettiah, Cops Now Stuck With Its Care

Bettiah police seized alcohol smuggled via horse in Nautan. The horse will be bonded to an individual.

Bihar News: A bizarre case has emerged from Bettiah in Bihar. The police conducted a raid to catch bootleggers, or alcohol smugglers, on Tuesday night. The police team, in high spirits, conducted the raid in the Nautan area. They did unearth the smuggling operation, but lo and behold — the only 'smuggler' the police managed to find was a horse.

Bihar is a dry state.

What Happened During The Bettiah Raid

On the night of Tuesday, March 11, a Nautan police team was on patrol when it spotted some horses near the Gandak (river). Upon closer inspection, they found cartons of alcohol on one of the horses.

The police found four cartons of foreign liquor on the horse's back. According to the police, the liquor was being transported from Uttar Pradesh on the horse.

However, they could not find the actual smugglers. The police team managed to rein in one of the horses but the others carrying more cartons of alcohol managed to cross the river. The police seized the alcohol and are investigating further.

What Happens To The Horse Now?

Nautan Station House Officer Rajesh Kumar stated that the horse was being used for liquor smuggling. The police seized the alcohol as well as the horse. The police are stuck with caring for the horse now, but the animal can't simply be released into the wild.

The police have decided to hand over the horse to a private individual.

SHO Kumar said the horse is currently being kept at the police station, and its care is being provided by the police. After two days, the horse is likely to be handed over to an individual after executing a bond to ensure proper care.

With Holi fast approaching, liquor smugglers in Bihar are employing various tactics for bootlegging. Despite continuous police action, smuggling liquor continues in tankers and even in ambulances.
