Beas River Floods In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh; IMD Issues Red Alert After Heavy Rain

Red alert issued in Himachal’s Mandi district as heavy rainfall causes Beas River to flood. IMD warns of landslides, flash floods, and more intense rain in the coming days.

Torrential rain has unleashed severe flooding in Himachal Pradesh’s Beas River, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the region. With weather conditions rapidly deteriorating, authorities are bracing for more intense downpours and a heightened risk of landslides and flash floods.

According to the IMD, the state has witnessed widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several areas receiving heavy to very heavy precipitation. Palampur recorded the highest rainfall at 76 mm, closely followed by Banjar with 75 mm and Sirmaur with 55 mm.

"Almost all areas in the state have seen rain," said Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD’s Shimla Centre. “People are strongly advised to stay away from rivers and streams as the threat of landslides remains significant.”

What’s Ahead: Rain to Ease Briefly, Then Return Stronger

While some temporary relief was expected on June 28, forecasters warned that the intensity would likely pick up again by June 29 and 30, especially in mid-hill and higher-altitude regions. An orange alert was issued earlier for the latter half of the week, highlighting risks of flooding and landslides in several districts.

Sharma confirmed that heavy rain is expected to resume, with districts like Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur placed under a heightened warning. The forecast also indicates significant rainfall in Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, which could further aggravate the flood situation.

District-by-District Forecast

The IMD has outlined varying degrees of rainfall across the state:

  • Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra: Light to moderate showers, with isolated spells of intense to very intense rain.
  • Kullu, Una, and Chamba: Light to moderate rainfall expected.
  • Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti: Isolated light rainfall likely over the next few hours.

To keep the public informed, the IMD has been regularly updating local agencies and the State Disaster Management Authority through SMS alerts and official bulletins.

Public Advisory: Stay Cautious, Stay Safe

In light of the ongoing weather emergency, officials have issued a strong advisory to residents and tourists, especially those in low-lying or hilly areas. People are urged to avoid venturing near rivers, steep slopes, and unstable terrain, as landslides and flash floods remain a serious risk during this period.

As the monsoon gains momentum, Himachal Pradesh is facing one of its most challenging weather phases this season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with disaster response teams on standby to tackle any emergencies.

Situation Worsens in Himachal Due to Continuous Rainfall

Monsoon has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh within just ten days. Torrential rain continues to lash most parts of the state, severely disrupting normal life. Multiple incidents of cloudbursts have been reported in the Mandi district. In the Karsog sub-division, a cloudburst caused extensive damage—fields were washed away and roads were blocked. A 45-year-old man lost his life, while two others are missing. In the Syanj village of Gohar area in Mandi, flood-like conditions have emerged, with nine people reported missing. Fortunately, a mother and daughter were rescued in time.

The heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction across various parts of Mandi district. Waterlogging in Pandoh market worsened the situation, prompting authorities to shift people to safer locations. The Bakhli and Kuklah bridges have been washed away, and the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway is closed. The Patikari Hydroelectric Project has also suffered major damage.

Around 50 people have been rescued from different locations in Mandi. A landslide triggered by heavy rain has occurred near Hanogi, affecting tunnels 11 and 13 on the Mandi-Manali road. Reports indicate that some people are trapped inside the tunnels. In the Syathi village of Laungni Panchayat, Dharampur Assembly constituency in Mandi, a dozen houses, cowsheds, and numerous horses, cattle, and goats have been swept away due to last night’s rain.

Due to the intense rainfall, the water level of the Pandoh Dam has neared the danger mark, leading to the release of approximately 1.5 lakh cusecs of water into the Beas River. In Mandi city, the river water has reached the Panchvaktra Temple. Several homes, cowsheds, and livestock in the Laungni Panchayat of Dharampur have been submerged. Relief and rescue operations continued overnight in the Indira Awas Colony and Raghunathpadhar areas.

In Hamirpur district’s Kheri village of Sujanpur, rising water levels of the Beas River left more than two dozen people stranded. Fortunately, police have managed to rescue 15 people so far. Meanwhile, the Beas River in Sujanpur is in full spate, forcing authorities to close the Sujanpur bridge to all traffic due to safety concerns.

Shimla has been receiving continuous rainfall for the past three days, worsening the situation. Several connecting roads are blocked, and landslides are occurring in multiple areas. The city’s water supply has also been disrupted due to silt accumulation in power projects. Thankfully, Shimla has not reported any major damage so far.

In view of the heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides in Mandi, Kangra, and Hamirpur districts, all educational institutions have been ordered shut on Tuesday. Authorities have urged people to stay in safe locations and avoid going near rivers and streams. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in some areas of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una districts in the next three hours.
