Early Morning Showers Drench Mumbai; IMD Issues Orange Alert For Heavy Rainfall Today

Heavy rain drenched Mumbai early Monday, triggering waterlogging in several areas. IMD has issued an orange alert, warning of more downpours and possible traffic disruptions throughout the day.

Mumbai woke up to a wet start on Monday as intense early morning showers lashed the city, leaving roads submerged and daily life momentarily thrown off track. Between 2 am and 5 am, the rain came down hardest over South Mumbai and the western suburbs, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert, warning of potential flooding and traffic disruptions throughout the day.

Several areas recorded substantial rainfall, with the Fort area topping the charts at 74 mm, followed closely by Bandra (62 mm), Malabar Hill (60 mm), and Lower Parel (58 mm). Other parts of the city weren't spared either — Haji Ali logged 57 mm, Matunga 56 mm, Grant Road and Santacruz 47 mm each, and Dadar 41 mm.

Early Showers In The City

The western suburbs also saw a steady spell. Andheri recorded 33 mm, while Mumbai Central and Borivali received 30 mm and 28 mm, respectively. Light to moderate rain was also reported in Worli (26 mm), BKC (25 mm), Versova (23 mm), and Dindoshi (22 mm).

Interestingly, while Mumbai was drenched, Thane remained mostly dry during the same time frame, though the IMD has forecast rainfall in the area later today.

Orange Alert Issued: What's Ahead?

The IMD’s seven-day forecast suggests that Monday will continue to be rainy, especially over South Mumbai and parts of the western suburbs. The orange alert remains in place, signalling a likelihood of localised flooding, waterlogging, and major traffic delays.

Tuesday is expected to bring similar weather conditions, with heavy rainfall and overcast skies likely to persist. By Wednesday, however, the intensity of the rain is predicted to ease, with only intermittent showers expected and no official weather warnings in place.

City on Alert, Disaster Teams on Standby

As water filled streets and slowed traffic during the morning commute, civic authorities sprang into action. Disaster response teams have been put on standby, ready to step in should the situation worsen. Residents are urged to remain cautious, especially those in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
