Delhi University Student Sneha Debnath’s Body Recovered From Yamuna River 6 Days After She Went Missing

Sneha, a 19-year-old Tripura native and Delhi University student, was found dead in the Yamuna River near Geeta Colony after being missing for six days. She had been living away from her family in Delhi. The cause of death is currently unknown.

The 19-year-old girl, a native of Tripura, was found dead after being missing in Delhi for the past six days, reports news agency PTI. Sneha, a student of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University, had been living in Delhi away from her family for some time.

Her body was found in the Yamuna River, near the Geeta Colony area in East Delhi.

A search had been launched following the registration of a missing person FIR at the Mehrauli Police Station. According to police, Debnath left a handwritten note behind, indicating an intent to jump off the Signature Bridge, built across the Yamuna River. Police traced Debnath's movements through technical surveillance and confirmed her last known location as the Signature Bridge.

The cab driver who dropped her there, as well as some eyewitnesses, said that they saw a woman standing on the bridge and later disappearing from the spot, reports news agency PTI quoting police.

The officials confirmed that Sneha's body was seen floating in the river under the Geeta Colony flyover. It was later identified by her family members.

Police said Debnath had sent messages through email and messaging apps to her close friends in the early hours of July 7. Her friends informed investigators that she had been disturbed and emotionally distressed for the past few months. Her family and friends have also expressed concerns about the surveillance infrastructure in the area around the Signature Bridge.

Who Was Sneha Debnath?

Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old girl from Sabroom in the South Tripura district, went missing in the national capital for six days. Following this, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha gave necessary instructions to the police to take immediate and appropriate action on the matter.

In a statement posted on its official social media account, the Tripura Chief Minister's Office stated, "The report of Miss Sneha Debnath, a resident of Sabroom, who has reportedly gone missing in New Delhi, has come to the notice of the Chief Minister's Office. Following this, necessary instructions have been promptly issued to the police to take immediate and appropriate action."

Sneha, a student of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University, was last in contact with her family on July 7. According to her family, she informed her mother that she would be accompanying a friend, Pitunia, to Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. Her final phone call was made at 5:56 a.m.

The concern escalated when her phone was found switched off by 8:45 a.m., and it was later confirmed that Pitunia had not met Sneha that morning as planned.
