A 22-year-old pharmacy student died by suicide at a Lucknow college hostel after allegedly being denied entry to his practical exam over unpaid hostel fees.

A 22-year-old pharmacy student died by suicide at a private college hostel in the Chinhat area of Lucknow late Wednesday night after allegedly being barred from appearing in his practical examination due to non-payment of hostel fees.
The deceased, identified as Shubham, hailed from Udhabandh Dudhwan village in Rae Bareli district. He was a BPharma student at Samarpan College of Pharmacy, located on Deva Road, and was residing in Room No. 109 of the college hostel.
Student dies by suicide over unpaid fees
According to police, Shubham was scheduled to take a practical exam on Wednesday. However, college authorities reportedly denied him permission to appear for the exam, citing pending hostel fee dues. Devastated by the decision, Shubham allegedly hanged himself inside his hostel room later that night.
The incident sparked outrage among fellow students, who gathered at the hostel and staged protests against the college administration. Accusing the authorities of negligence and insensitivity, the students demanded immediate action. Meanwhile, the college chairman claimed to be unaware of the incident and assured a full investigation, promising strict action against anyone found guilty.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Pankaj Singh, confirmed that a two-page suicide note was recovered from the scene. In the note, Shubham allegedly wrote: "I had deposited the fees, but the system still shows it as pending. I don't know what my friends will think. Please forgive me, I’m deeply hurt and ending my life."
Police officials stated that parts of the handwritten note were unclear and have been sent for forensic analysis. An FIR will be registered based on the family's complaint, and the investigation will proceed accordingly.
What his friends said
Sources within the college said that although Shubham had reportedly cleared his fees, some dues were still showing as pending in the system. An accountant had allegedly confronted him about the discrepancy. The student’s family has expressed deep anguish, claiming that despite the fees being paid, he was unfairly barred from attending the exam.
This tragic incident highlights the mounting academic and financial pressure faced by students across India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), thousands of students die by suicide each year, with financial strain, academic failure, and family pressure being cited as major factors.
Shubham’s death has left his peers and family devastated, and they are now demanding immediate action against the college authorities. The police have sent the body for post-mortem and assured that all angles will be thoroughly investigated.
