BMC News: Mumbaikars may soon have to pay a "user-fee tax". The proposal will be tabled in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Budget presentation on Tuesday. A fee of Rs 50 will be levied on every family and Rs 100 per month on every business.
The fee will be levied for the form of cleanliness and solid waste management. This fee will give the BMC an additional revenue of Rs 600 to Rs 700 crore annually.
The BMC is India's richest civic body and will unveil its 2025-26 budget on Tuesday at 11 AM. The BMC Commissioner's announcement in his Budget speech is likely to face protests from the Opposition. The previous Budget hit a record Rs 60,000 crore.
Keeping in mind the upcoming municipal elections, there is a possibility of opposition from political parties. According to the TOI, the 2024-25 Budget for the BMC was Rs 59,954.75 crore, a 10.5% increase from the previous fiscal year.
Third Budget Presented To Administrator
Budget 2025-26 will be the third year that the Budget estimate is presented to an administrator and not a standing committee. BMC administrator and Bhushan Gagrani will review the Budget proposals on Tuesday. This will be Gagran's first Budget review.
The operations of the BMC have been overseen by an administrator since March 8, 2022, after the corporators' term ended.
The BMC Budget 2025-26 will focus on the completion of key projects like the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) from Versova to Bhayander, the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, and sewerage treatment plants (STPs), as per TOI.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar will present the budget estimates to the BMC.
