Badlapur Sexual Assault Case LIVE: Please follow this space and keep refreshing the page for all the latest updates pertaining to sexual assault on two nursery class girls in a school in Maharashtra's Badlapur that sparked outrage in the state.

The incident took place on August 12-13, 2024 when two four-year-old girls studying in the pre-primary classes of a prominent co-ed school in Badlapur were allegedly sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old male cleaning staff member inside a girls’ toilet.

The accused in the case was identified as Akshay Shinde. He was arrested by the police on August 17 for the incident that took place in Badlapur town in Maharashtra’s Thane district.

On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray expressed disagreement with a Bombay High Court order restraining political parties from calling a bandh, but asserted the opposition bloc MVA has withdrawn its proposed shutdown in Maharashtra on Saturday over a sexual abuse case in a school.

Addressing a press conference, the former Maharashtra CM said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has called off the August 24 (Saturday) bandh after the HC order, but leaders and workers from opposition parties will protest against the Mahayuti government with black bands tied around their mouth across the state.

The former CM, whose party is a constituent of the MVA, said he will also join the protest. "We don't agree with the High Court order on bandh," Thackeray maintained.

Earlier in the day, the HC restrained political parties or individuals from proceeding with a Maharashtra bandh over the sexual assault incident, on August 24 or any future date, saying such a protest will paralyse normal life.

He said Thane District Education Officer (DEO) Balasaheb Rakshe and BMC's education officer Rajesh Kankal have been suspended.

"Rakshe was suspended for not reporting the Badlapur sexual assault case in time so that action could have been taken quickly. Kankal has been suspended for non-installation of CCTV cameras in BMC schools. I have been following up on this issue for two years and even now work is in process and cameras are yet to be installed," Kesarkar said, as quouted by news agency PTI. Officials said BMC plans to install 2832 CCTV cameras in 123 schools at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore.
