Agra's Fatehabad Renamed 'Sindoorpuram', Badshahi Bagh Now 'Brahmapuram'
Agra Zila Panchayat approved renaming Fatehabad to Sindoorpuram and Badshahi Bagh to Brahmapuram, citing the current names' "slave" symbolism.

The Agra Zila Panchayat has passed a proposal to rename Fatehabad town as Sindoorpuram and the Badshahi Bagh area within it as Brahmapuram. The resolution was unanimously cleared during the board meeting and will now be forwarded to the Uttar Pradesh state government for formal approval.
The proposal was introduced by Zila Panchayat Chairperson Manju Bhadoria, who argued that the existing names "symbolised slavery" and needed to be replaced to reflect India’s cultural heritage and national pride.
Fatehabad's Old Name
The proposal noted that Fatehabad was previously known as Samugarh, a name linked to local history before being renamed during periods of foreign rule. The suggested name Sindoorpuram, according to the proposal, is intended to better represent local identity and tradition.
As for Badshahi Bagh, the proposal recommended renaming it Brahmapuram, citing its association with Lord Brahma and the BrahMos missile, an Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile symbolising India's defence capabilities and technological strength.
Speaking on the move, Bhadoria said, “This change is essential to break away from names that reflect a period of subjugation. The new names are intended to instil pride and reconnect with our cultural roots.”
The renaming proposal follows a recent trend in various Indian states where towns, streets, and public institutions have been rechristened to shed colonial or Mughal-era legacies. Once approved by the state government, the new names will officially replace the existing ones across administrative records, signage, and public usage.
