1 Dead, 4 Women Critical After Childbirth; Families Suspect Expired Saline Dosage Led To Sickness

Five women in India developed complications after giving birth at a hospital; one died, and four remain critically ill. Allegations suggest expired or contaminated IV fluid may be the cause.

In a matter of great concern regarding health crisis, a 22-year-old woman died and four others are fighting for their lives after delivering their babies at Midnapore Medical College Hospital on Friday.

According to the details, the women developed health complications, just after delivering their babies.

A report from The Times of India stated that all the deliveries were done by caesarean section on Wednesday, and the women showed symptoms including continuous bleeding and blood in urine.

It has been alleged by the families of the women that the Ringer's lactate (RL) being given to the mothers was expired or contaminated, which led to the serious health situation.

The five women were provided with medical attention and were shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Thursday. Unfortunately, Mamoni Ruidas, a resident of Garbeta, passed away on Friday morning.

In another report, as stated by Taaza TV, the relatives of the patients have raised multiple concerns about the saline used in their treatment. While some of them suspected that the saline contained fungal contamination, the others believe the one which was administered to the women was expired.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the state government has constituted a 13-member committee to investigate the matter and probe the complaints. As per the information, the committee, which includes obstetrics, gynaecology, cardiology specialists and people from the state drug control, will visit the hospital on Saturday.

Hospital superintendent Jayanta Raut said that an emergency meeting was called and a report to the health department would be send.

Chief Medical Officer Soumya Sankar said that the incident may not be solely due yo RL, other reasons could also be involved. He added that samples have been taken and the reports are awaited.

On Thursday, the husbands of the other four women submitted a complaint to the hospital superintendent alleging negligence.
