Wipro Shuts Down Manufacturing Unit In Himachal's Baddi, 80 Workers Laid Off

Many employees were reportedly caught off guard by the closure. Several workers claimed they were unaware of the decision and only learned of it when they arrived for their shifts

Wipro has permanently shut down one of its manufacturing units in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the layoff of 80 employees, according to a company announcement made on May 24, 2025. The decision follows months of labour unrest and an ongoing workers’ strike that began in December 2024.

Many employees were reportedly caught off guard by the closure. Several workers claimed they were unaware of the decision and only learned of it when they arrived for their shifts and were stopped at the factory gates by security personnel. According to sources, some of these employees had only recently resumed work in December, making the sudden shutdown all the more unexpected.

Why Wipro Closed The Unit

Reports suggest the closure was driven by continued operational disruptions and significant financial losses. Wipro has officially cited economic unsustainability as the primary reason for winding down the facility. Despite ongoing discussions between company management and the workers’ union, no resolution could be reached.

One of the key points of contention was Wipro's refusal to withdraw police cases filed against certain protesting employees. This reportedly became a major barrier to any potential agreement between the two sides.

Compensation And Fallout

Wipro has stated it will provide all statutory compensation and support to the affected workers. However, the abrupt nature of the layoffs has triggered protests in the area, and the workers’ union has filed a formal complaint with the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and the state Labour Department.

The closure marks a significant blow to both the local workforce and the region’s industrial activity, given the unit’s key role in Wipro’s manufacturing operations. It’s important to note, however, that another Wipro facility in Baddi remains operational.
