Nitin Gadkari Unveils World's First Prototype Of Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle

The world's first prototype of BS-6 (Stage II) ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle’ is developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motor in an effort to enhance and promote the use of clean energy in the country.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday unveiled the world's first ethanol-powered car Toyota Innova. The world's first prototype of BS-6 (Stage II) ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle’ is developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motor in an effort to enhance and promote the use of clean energy in the country.

In a tweet, Gadkari said, "This innovative vehicle is based on the Innova Hycross and is engineered to adhere to India's stricter emission standards, marking it as the first-ever BS 6 (Stage II) Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle prototype globally. The forthcoming stages for this prototype encompass meticulous refinement, homologation, and certification processes."

He said, "Ethanol being an indigenous, eco-friendly, and renewable fuel holds promising prospects for India. The emphasis of the Modi government on ethanol aligns with objectives of attaining energy self-sufficiency, doubling farmers' income, transitioning them to Urjadata while continuing to support them as Annadata, and positively impacting the environment."

During the launch event, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, MD and CEO of Toyota Masakazu Yoshimura, and MD and CEO of Kirloskar Systems Limited Geetanjali Kirloskar, Ambassador, Diplomats from Japan Embassy, were also present.

"Technology has been developed and we are developing the model. I think it will hit the market soon...It will generate 60% electricity while moving and the remaining will be 40% ethanol - instead of petrol - on which it will run...Today the farmer has become 'urja daata' and 'bitumen daata'. He will also become 'bio aviation fuel data," Nitin Gadkari told reporters, as quoted by ANI.

As per a Moneycontrol report, a flexible-fuel vehicle (FFV) is an alternative fuel automobile equipped with an internal combustion engine capable of using multiple fuels. Typically, FFVs are designed to operate on a blend of gasoline and either ethanol or methanol, with both fuels stored in a shared tank. Known as E85, the flexible-fuel blend contains 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline or other hydrocarbons by volume. The inclusion of ethanol in gasoline blends can lead to varied emissions benefits, influenced by factors such as vehicle type, engine tuning, and the ethanol-to-gasoline ratio
