Mahindra Becomes India's Third-Largest Carmaker, Overtaking Tata Motors In Sept Sales Surge

Mahindra & Mahindra achieved this milestone following a robust sales performance in September 2024, marking a 24 per cent increase in sales

Mahindra & Mahindra, India's largest SUV manufacturer, has officially become the third-largest carmaker in the country. The automaker achieved this milestone following a robust sales performance in September 2024, marking a 24 per cent increase in sales. This surge allowed Mahindra to surpass Tata Motors, largely driven by the popularity of models such as the Thar, XUV700, Scorpio-N, and XUV300. The brand's line-up has further expanded with the introduction of the new Thar Roxx, for which bookings will begin in October.

Maruti Suzuki remains the top car manufacturer in the Indian market, followed by Hyundai Motor India, the local arm of the South Korean conglomerate. With this recent accomplishment, Mahindra has significantly narrowed the gap with Hyundai. In September, Mahindra sold 51,062 SUVs, just slightly behind Hyundai’s 51,101 units, which saw a 5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in sales.

Commenting on the achievement, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra took to X to express his thoughts. He said, "The only race worth winning is the one you race against yourself; Against your OWN aspirations."

He also acknowledged Tata Motors as a respected competitor, adding, "We have always seen Tata Motors as a respected elder brother that spurs us to keep improving ourselves. And we hope that we too, motivate them to reach new heights. The journey will always have twists and turns, but we continue to travel together…"

Mahindra was one of the few automakers to report an increase in sales during September, a month when many top manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors, reduced dealer shipments due to slowing demand and excess inventory. Besides Mahindra, Kia and Toyota also recorded positive sales growth during this period.

The sales increase comes as dealers gear up for the upcoming festive season, which runs from early October to early November. Indian consumers traditionally make significant purchases during this time, taking advantage of festive discounts and considering it an auspicious period to buy new items, including vehicles.
