Google Lays Off 200 Employees In Global Business Unit, Says Report

This latest round of job cuts follows previous downsizing within Google’s platforms and devices division, which oversees key products such as Android, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser

Google has reportedly laid off around 200 employees from its global business organization, a division responsible for sales and partnerships, as part of ongoing restructuring efforts. According to The Information report, citing an individual familiar with the matter. This underscores the tech giant’s continued pivot toward artificial intelligence (AI) and data center investments, while reducing expenditures in other segments.

Google issued a statement to Reuters, describing the layoffs as part of “a small number of changes across teams” aimed at enhancing collaboration and improving customer service delivery. The company stressed that the restructuring is intended to help teams operate more efficiently and better align with evolving business priorities.

Previous Layoffs At Google

This latest round of job cuts follows previous downsizing within Google’s platforms and devices division, which oversees key products such as Android, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser. In April, The Information reported that hundreds of roles had been eliminated from that unit, signaling broader shifts in the company’s strategic focus.

The ongoing job reductions are part of a larger trend among major technology firms, many of which are streamlining operations to concentrate resources on high-growth areas like AI. In January 2023, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, announced the termination of 12,000 roles, roughly 6 per cent of its global workforce. As of December 31, 2024, Alphabet employed 183,323 people, according to regulatory filings.

Tech Layoffs

Google is not alone in reevaluating its workforce. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, laid off approximately 5 per cent of its lowest-performing employees earlier this year, while ramping up recruitment for machine learning talent. Similarly, Microsoft cut 650 jobs in its Xbox division in late 2024. Amazon has also implemented layoffs across various units, including its communications team, and Apple reportedly trimmed around 100 roles in its digital services division last year.
