SUVs dominated the automotive space in India in 2024 but amongst them, one stood out as the most talked about launch. Of course, we are talking about the Thar Roxx from Mahindra which was launched with much fanfare earlier this year. However, while we liked the diesel version, there is going to be demand for the petrol too. The Roxx petrol is also more powerful and gets additional power over the 3-door Thar. Plus, even the petrol automatic version we have here also has more power than the manual at 174bhp and 380Nm.

Roxx Petrol Driving Experience

While the Scorpio N and the XUV700 have a bigger power output with the 2.0l direct injection turbo petrol, this much power is more than ample for big Roxx. While being quite refined, the immediate power and the way it takes off gives you a hint that it is a fun engine with being tuned for performance rather than efficiency. Performance is strong and you do not need paddle shifters with immediate acceleration making it easy for quick overtakes. Despite its size and weight, the engine and the performance is surprising while you do not even need to engage the Zoom mode for additional urgency. We also felt Zoom mode to be a bit more aggressive hence the standard one is more than enough.

The light steering further makes it an easier car to drive along with parking it. Compared to the 3-door, the Roxx is much easier to drive while in terms of handling, despite the size plus the obvious body roll, the driving experience is quite polished and fun. It really is impressive how Mahindra have worked on the performance as well as the handling. The low speed ride has some of the bounciness that you expect from a ladder frame SUV but it settles down while it cruises effortlessly at high speeds, save for a bit of wind noise at triple digit speeds.

Roxx Petrol Fuel Efficiency

Efficiency is something that is quite a matter of discussion with the Roxx petrol but here you will get 8-10kmpl depending on the way you drive. For a large, petrol SUV with a big engine, that's acceptable. However, the small 57l fuel tank means constant fuel ups if you are travelling long distances. The diesel here has an advantage with more fuel efficiency and more range. 

Verdict

The top-end petrol AT is just below Rs 20 lakh and for Delhi NCR, the Roxx petrol makes sense while for those who do not drive for long distances everyday, a petrol Roxx is also something they can consider. While there is less efficiency and range than the diesel, the petrol is more fun and refined which means the Roxx petrol will attract a buyer base.
