Kia Syros Petrol Automatic Review, Mileage And Space

The Syros stands out in a sea of conventional designs and its boxy looks do capture attention. The front-end is almost like an EV with the blanked off area.

The Syros is Kia India trying to get another slice of the sub 4m pie and after the Sonet they have looked at the space between it and the Seltos. The result is the Syros which is focussed on space, comfort and features while coming with turbo petrol and diesel options. It aims to give more space than 4m plus SUVs so we found out if it's worth the hype or not.

How does it look?

The Syros stands out in a sea of conventional designs and its boxy looks do capture attention. The front-end is almost like an EV with the blanked off area while the quirky headlamps are placed rather uniquely at the side. Needless to say you have to be careful when parking so as to not damage them due to the position. The side view has a tall and boxy roofline with large windows while the rear also has slim tail-lamps. Compared to other sub 4m SUVs, the Syros has good road presence due to the size but the boxy looks do divide opinion.

What about the interiors?

Inside though the quality and fit/finish is superb. The design is modern and it has a new look steering wheel with the Kia logo being off centre. Plus there is a massive 30-inch display including the digital cluster along with a small screen for the climate control too. We must say that the quality of plastics, door pad design to the switchgear is all fantastic- it feels high-end and better than just about every sub 4m SUV including the Sonet. The infotainment system is also modern and crisp with a high quality display too including the feed for the 360 degree camera.

Storage is also quite good and the centre console itself has plenty of space to store stuff. Space is a highlight though with the rear seat again being the best in the sub 4m space with its wide rear seat, plenty of space and adjustability. You can recline/slide it and there is cooling too. You can have three passengers although the middle headrest is missing. While the loading lip is on the high side, the boot is huge.

What about features?

There is plenty of features on offer starting with the 30-inch display, cooled seats for front/rear, panoramic sunroof, 360 degree camera,  blind view monitor, an 8-speaker audio system with a decent sound output, a voice assistant plus ADAS, cup holders which can be resized and even using the windows via the smart key. safety includes 6 airbags, ABS with ESC, Hill start assist etc

What about driving?

We tested the 1.0 turbo petrol with 120bhp and with the 7-speed DCT automatic. There is no naturally aspirated unit and this is the sole petrol engine. There is some lag but the DCT is responsive and there are paddles while the engine has enough punch-even with luggage and 5 passengers as we saw. While the gearbox is a bit jerky at low speeds, it smoothes out and has ample performance for a subcompact SUV. Steering feedback and high-speed stability is pretty good while there is roll, it is contained. We also noticed a firm low-speed ride while NVH is lightly on the louder side. However, it is compact and light enough for city speeds but the steering has  a bit more heft over the Sonet. Mileage we got was 12-13 kmpl with careful driving which is decent.

Is it worth a buy?

The top-end Syros petrol AT is Rs lakh and it is a different but appealing car for families. You buy the Syros for the sheer space on offer which beats other 4m plus SUVs too and the superb interior quality along with features. Sure, it has boxy looks and the NVH could be better but the Syros could be an ideal SUV for families needing a quality but spacious SUV without being huge on the outside.
