Pahalgam Attack Fallout: India’s Strong Diplomatic And Strategic Response Welcomed

In response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India has initiated a series of strong diplomatic and strategic steps that have been widely welcomed. The Prime Minister chaired a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) where five crucial decisions were taken. These include suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a move seen as a major pressure point on Pakistan, which heavily relies on these river waters.Diplomatic experts noted that this suspension may indicate Pakistan’s willingness to backtrack on its covert support to cross-border terrorism. The CCS also announced the closure of the Attari checkpoint and the cancellation of all SAARC visa exemptions for Pakistani citizens.Commentators pointed to the historical backdrop of such moves, referencing the Simla Agreement of 1972, which converted the ceasefire line into the Line of Control (LoC) and fostered a tacit understanding that both nations would resolve issues bilaterally. India has repeatedly cited this agreement to counter Pakistan’s attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue. With increasing evidence of Pakistan’s involvement, India’s decision to downgrade diplomatic ties and withdraw its defense advisers from Islamabad reflects a toughened stance. National security experts believe that more hostile intentions from across the LoC may soon be exposed.
