Manmohan Singh Last Rites: Former PM Embarks on His Final Journey, Cong Workers Gather in Thousands
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 in Delhi on Thursday. Admitted to AIIMS Delhi due to age-related health complications, he breathed his last at 9:51 PM. His mortal remains were brought to his residence late on Thursday night, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other leaders paid their final respects on Friday, offering condolences to his wife, Gursharan Kaur. The last rites will be conducted on Saturday, following the arrival of Singh’s daughter, a professor at Stanford Law School, who landed in India on Friday evening. The Union Home Ministry announced a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India and at Indian missions and high commissions abroad. A state funeral will be accorded, and no official entertainment will be held during the mourning period. Several states, including Bihar, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Assam, and Telangana, declared week-long mourning for the late leader. Tributes poured in from across the nation and the world, celebrating his humility, vision, simplicity, and contributions to economic reforms. Panjab University, where Singh completed his Master’s in Economics in 1954 and served as a lecturer and professor, held a condolence meeting to honor its distinguished alumnus. Widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms, Singh’s legacy includes steering the nation as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and shaping its economic framework as Finance Minister under the PV Narasimha Rao government.
