Kolkata Doctor Case: BJP Calls for Bengal Bandh Against Lathi Charge on Students During Demonstration
The BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal today, Wednesday (August 28). This follows a protest in Kolkata on Tuesday (August 27) over a rape-murder case, during which demonstrators attempted to march to the state secretariat, 'Nabanna.' The situation escalated as clashes broke out between the protesters and the police, leading to a police lathi charge and the use of water cannons. In response to the police action, the BJP announced the bandh on August 28. The protests were triggered by the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, with demands for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. Demonstrators accused the CM of failing to maintain law and order, calling for her to step down. The police used tear gas, lathi charge, and water cannons to disperse the crowd heading toward 'Nabanna.' BJP's state president, Sukanta Majumdar, stated that they were forced to call a strike from morning till evening because the government was not listening to the people's voices. He emphasized that people are demanding justice for the deceased doctor, and instead of delivering justice, Mamata Banerjee's police are treating peaceful citizens harshly. He also announced a sit-in protest at Esplanade in Kolkata on August 29. The controversy surrounding the Kolkata rape-murder case has reached a boiling point in West Bengal, with the Mamata government under heavy criticism. The CBI is currently investigating the case, and a polygraph test has been conducted on the accused, Sanjay Roy. Updates related to the Bengal bandh can be followed in the cards below.
