Delhi Faces Flood Risk As Yamuna Water Levels Approach Evacuation Threshold Tonight

The national capital, Delhi, is facing a serious flood threat as the Yamuna River continues to rise. At present, the water level stands at 204.8 meters, above the warning mark and dangerously close to the danger level of 205.33 meters. According to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the river is expected to reach 206 meters tonight, crossing the evacuation threshold for low-lying residential areas. Residents living near the river have been advised to move to safer locations to avoid potential waterlogging and risk to life.The Hathnikund Barrage has released a massive volume of water into the Yamuna, with 17,800 cusecs discharged last night and an additional 58,282 cusecs released early this morning. This has accelerated the river’s flow, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation from key points such as Loha Bridge. Over 25 motorboats are patrolling the river, making announcements and assisting residents in affected areas like Bhajanpura, Akshardham, and Yamuna Bazaar.The continuous monitoring aims to ensure timely evacuation and minimize risk. Residents are urged to follow official instructions, avoid riverbanks, and stay alert until the water level stabilizes. Authorities warn that tonight’s water surge could significantly affect Delhi’s low-lying areas if preventive measures are not observed.
