Breaking News: Three-Story Building Collapses in Meerut, 3 Dead and 5 Trapped Under Debris
In a tragic incident in Meerut's Zakir Colony, Uttar Pradesh, a three-story building collapsed, resulting in the death of nine people and injuries to five others, according to a police official on Sunday. Rescue operations are still underway at the site, with efforts to save two individuals believed to be trapped under the debris. Meerut District Magistrate Deepak Meena confirmed that the collapse led to nine fatalities, and it's feared that two more people are still buried under the rubble. Rescue teams are working diligently to retrieve them, while the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital. A statement from the state's Relief Commissioner's office revealed that 15 people were initially trapped when the building suddenly collapsed. So far, 13 individuals have been rescued, nine of whom have unfortunately passed away. The five injured victims have been admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College for treatment. Efforts to rescue the remaining individuals are ongoing. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, with emergency services immediately alerted. Senior officials, including Meerut Zone's ADG D.K. Thakur, Commissioner Selva Kumari J, IG Nachiketa Jha, and SSP Dr. Vipin Tada, arrived at the site to oversee the rescue operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire department, and police are working together to rescue those trapped under the debris. It is expected that the remaining individuals will be rescued by the afternoon, though no official statement has been issued regarding the exact timeline for the completion of the operation.
