Breaking: Landslide Halts Jammu-Poonch Highway, Restoration Work Underway Amid Heavy Rains
A major landslide in the Kalidhar Hills triggered chaos on the Jammu–Poonch National Highway, forcing authorities to halt traffic in both directions. Heavy rains loosened rocks, soil, and uprooted trees, which tumbled down onto the roadway, completely blocking access. JCB machines have been deployed, and restoration efforts are ongoing at a war footing to clear the debris and reopen the route. The India Meteorological Department had issued warnings yesterday about potential heavy rainfall and landslides in several districts, including Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, and Kathua. The prediction proved accurate, as continuous downpours increased the risk of slope collapse. Long queues of vehicles have formed on both ends of the highway, with stranded passengers waiting for clearance. The Jammu–Poonch route serves as a crucial link for transport, trade, and connectivity in the region, making its closure a significant disruption. Officials on-site are closely monitoring weather conditions to ensure safe reopening. Travelers have been advised to delay non-essential journeys until further notice to avoid being caught in hazardous conditions. The restoration work is expected to continue until the debris is fully cleared and the road is deemed safe for passage.
