Anti-CAA protesters ring in new year with national anthem in Jamia
A number of people in the national capital ushered in the New Year by demonstrating against a citizenship law, despite PM Modi’s attempts to dampen protests that have run for nearly three weeks. As the clock struck 12, the protesting crowd outside Jamia Millia Islamia University burst into a cheer to greet the fellow protesters the new year, and moments later broke into the national anthem in unison which was followed by the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad". This way of celebration speaks a lot in itself after the voilence and protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act that rocked India since December 12, when the government passed legislation easing the way for non-Muslim minorities from neighbouring Muslim-majority nations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to gain Indian citizenship.
