When Your Employer Tells You To Quit: Harsh Goenka's Post On 9-5 Jobs Backfires

Industrialist Harsh Goenka called 9-to-5 jobs a trap in a viral post, sparking backlash online. Users called out the irony, noting that his own companies follow the same work structure.

Indian billionaire Harsh Goenka faced massive backlash after sharing a video on social media that criticised 9-to-5 jobs as life-consuming traps.

He shared a post, captioned “Wake up….before it's too late” on X, formerly known as Twitter. However, it quickly backfired as users called out the hypocrisy.

The post showed an animated video titled "How 9to5 jobs take over your life". The video depicted a worker confined in progressively larger boxes throughout their career, ending with a retired person falling while trying to skateboard, symbolising that a lifetime of work left them unable to enjoy life.

What was intended as motivational content became a lightning rod for criticism. Social media users were quick to point out the contradiction between Goenka's message and his position as head of organisations that depend on the very employment model he was mocking.

The Privilege of Choice vs The Reality of Survival

For most people, 9-to-5 jobs aren't a trap they willingly enter — they're a necessity for survival. Goenka's ability to criticise traditional employment while benefiting from it represented a level of privilege many found tone-deaf.

While entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly popular, the vast majority of people still need stable employment to support themselves and their families.

Highlighting the insensitive nature of the post, one user wittily commented, "Sir ji, don't show it to your employees. Imagine if all your employees start believing in it. Then what will happen to your organisation?"

Another pointed, out, “Not everyone is born with generational wealth and ready made factories!"

Meanwhile, another user highlighted the hypocrisy of the post and said, “Irony is, it's coming from an entrepreneur who employs people for 9-to-5 jobs.”

The incident highlighted a broader tension in workplace discourse. While discussions about work-life balance are valuable, they take on a different tone when voiced by wealthy business owners who built their success on such traditional employment policies.
