Telangana: IIIT Basara Student Dies By Suicide On Campus, Probe Underway

The student, identified as Deepika, aged 17 and in her first year of the PUC, was found hanging in a washroom within the administrative building of RGUKT, also known as IIIT Basara.

A student of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT) in Basara town of Telangana's Nirmal district purportedly committed suicide on Tuesday. The student, identified as Deepika, aged 17 and in her first year of the Pre-University Course (PUC), was found hanging in a washroom within the administrative building of RGUKT, also known as IIIT Basara. According to the IANS report, as Deepika did not come out of the washroom even after half an hour, the staff grew suspicious and went in to find her hanging from the ceiling fan with her scarf. She was immediately taken to the government hospital in Nirmal, where doctors declared her dead.

According to reports, Sangareddy district native Deepika was under mental strain. Tuesday morning, she went to her teachers for assistance after showing up for the physics exam. While the teachers were trying to give her advice, she committed suicide in the lavatory. A case has been registered by the police, and an investigation is underway.

In December of the previous year, a student named Bhanu Prasad, aged 17, a student in PUC's second year, committed suicide in the boys' hostel on Basara IIIT campus. University officials stated that Prasad left a suicide note mentioning personal reasons as the cause. However, some students have alleged that Prasad, who hails from Ranga Reddy district, took such a drastic step due to academic pressure and strict rules.

In another unfortunate incident in August of the same year, a 19-year-old student named Rathod Suresh, who was studying in the first year of the B. Tech integrated programme, hanged himself in his hostel room. Suresh, who was from Dichpally in Nizamabad district, was believed to have taken this extreme step due to personal reasons.

In May 2020, a 16-year-old student named Bondla Sanjay, who was studying PUC in his first year at the institution, committed suicide by jumping off a building following a dispute with a classmate over a girl.
