Telangana Govt Sanctions 8 New Medical Colleges
The colleges will be developed and made available for the next academic year for medical aspirants. Each of these colleges will have an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats.
The BRS government in Telangana issued orders on Wednesday to establish eight new government medical colleges in the state. The colleges will be developed and made available for the next academic year for medical aspirants. Each of these colleges, along with government general hospitals, will have an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats. The colleges will be established at Maheshwaram in Rangareddy district, Yadadri in Yadadri Bhongir district, Medak in Medak district, Narsampet in Warangal district, Mulugu in Mulugu district, Narayanpet in Narayanpet district, Gadwal in Jogulamba Gadwal district, and Quthbullapur in Medchal Malkajgiri district.
Notably, two of these colleges, namely Maheshwaram and Quthbullapur, will be situated on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The administrative sanction for establishing these new medical colleges was accorded by the government, with the state Health, Medical, and Family Welfare Secretary S.A.M Rizvi issuing the orders.
Health Minister T. Harish Rao highlighted that the vision of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, which aimed at having one medical college per district, is now becoming a reality. These colleges are in line with the Arogya Telangana vision and will provide more opportunities for students to pursue medical education while enhancing healthcare services in the respective districts.

The state currently tops in the country in terms of MBBS seats, with 22 MBBS seats per lakh population, and stands second for PG course seats, with 7.5 per lakh. The addition of 800 new MBBS seats will raise the total number of seats in the state to approximately 10,000. Harish Rao also revealed that Telangana accounts for 43 percent of the newly added MBBS seats in government medical colleges across India. Out of the 2,118 increased seats for the 2023-24 academic year in government medical colleges in India, 900 seats belong to Telangana.
In April, the government had already approved two medical colleges, making a total of nine medical colleges approved for the academic year 2023-24. Furthermore, eight medical colleges became operational in the state starting from the academic year 2022-23.
KCR, the Chief Minister, initiated the establishment of one medical college in each of the 33 districts of Telangana.
