Telangana Govt Declares Two-day Holidays For Educational Institutions Due To Heavy Rains

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for some districts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, for Wednesday.

The Telangana government has declared a two-day holiday for all educational institutions in the state due to incessant heavy rains. All educational institutions, including government, government-aided, and private, will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao instructed Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy to declare holidays amid the continuing rains in several parts of the state.

The heavy rains have led to flooding in low-lying areas in some districts, affecting road transport and disrupting normal life. Lakes, tanks, and other water bodies are overflowing. Velpur Mandal in the united Nizamabad district experienced a record 46 cm of rainfall, resulting in severe flooding. Two lakes breached in the Mandal, leading to the inundation of residential areas and causing damage to agriculture fields, resulting in significant losses for farmers.

The Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams of GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) have swung into action to clear fallen trees and address water stagnation points in Hyderabad. The water level in Hussain Sagar Lake rose to 513.46 meters on Tuesday morning, slightly below the Full Tank Level (FTL) of 514.75 meters. Given the possibility of more rain over the next three days, authorities have issued alerts to residents living in areas along the river's discharge channels, advising them to move to safer places.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for some districts, including Hyderabad, for Wednesday. The forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rains, with extremely heavy rains at isolated places in Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, and Hyderabad districts.

IMD Hyderabad Director Dr. K Nagaratna, while talking to news agency ANI on Tuesday, said that light to moderate rainfall is expected in several districts of Telangana for the next 4-5 days.
