WhatsApp Working On Offline File-Sharing Feature That Doesn't Need Internet

Meta-owned WhatsApp is developing a groundbreaking feature that will let users exchange files without an active Internet connection.

Meta-owned WhatsApp is developing a groundbreaking feature that will let users exchange files without an active Internet connection. This functionality is reminiscent of Apple's AirDrop and Google's Nearby Share, allowing seamless transfer of documents, videos, photos, and other files without impacting users' mobile data allowances, or the need to depend on Internet.

Cross-Platform Development

Initially observed on Android devices by WABetaInfo earlier this year, recent reports suggest that WhatsApp's development team is now focusing on bringing this feature to iOS devices as well. This cross-platform approach demonstrates WhatsApp's commitment to providing a unified user experience across different operating systems.

Implementation Differences

While the core functionality remains similar, the iOS version of this feature may differ slightly in its implementation. Reports indicate that iOS users might need to scan a QR code to initiate the file transfer process, potentially offering a more streamlined and secure method of connection.

Leveraging Existing Technologies

For Android users, WhatsApp is expected to use the built-in Quick Share functionality (formerly known as Nearby Share) to facilitate file transfers between devices. This approach allows WhatsApp to leverage existing technologies, potentially simplifying the implementation process and ensuring compatibility with a wide range of Android devices.

Future Availability

Although still in the development phase, there is optimism that this offline file-sharing feature will be included in an upcoming version of the WhatsApp application. As the feature progresses through various stages of testing and refinement, users can look forward to a more versatile and data-efficient messaging experience in the near future.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp and Facebook parent Meta has announced an expansion of capabilities for its AI chatbot, Meta AI. According to a company statement, the chatbot will now be accessible in several additional languages, including Hindi, across Meta's popular platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
The update also introduces new creative and generative features to Meta AI.

Users will now have access to tools for creating customized images and tackling more intricate challenges. These enhancements aim to provide a more versatile and personalised experience for users interacting with the AI across Meta's suite of social media applications.
