Har Ghar Tiranga: Changing Your Twitter/X DP? You'll Briefly Lose Your Verified Blue Tick

As part of Twitter's new changes, some activities by users may lead to a brief removal of blue ticks on Twitter.

To kick off this year's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to showcase the national flag on their profile photos on social media. Now, as Twitter Blue users are changing their DPs to the tricolour, they report of their much-coveted blue ticks disappearing without a warning. Even organisations like the BCCI have also lost their gold ticks due to the DP change. Now, in case you too have lost your blue tick, fret not, as Twitter briefly removes its verification badges once an account changes its profile photo. After a round of background checks, the tick gets restored automatically.

Twitter (now known as X), after Elon Musk’s hostile $44-billion takeover, brought in some major changes to the microblogging platform, most notably to the company’s much-sought-after ‘verified’ blue ticks. In December 2022, Twitter Blue was officially rolled out to users (Indian users gained access starting February this year), which asked for a payment of $8 per month (or Rs 900 for mobile users in India) to allow retention of blue ticks, along with some other features such as long-form tweets, edit tweets, and so on.

Now, as part of the new changes, some activities by users may lead to a brief removal of blue ticks on Twitter. Here’s a list of things you should avoid to not lose your blue tick.

Don’t Change Profile Photo

As mentioned earlier, Twitter will remove blue, gold, or any other verification badges after a profile photo is changed. But, after a round of background review, the tick is reinstated eventually.

Don’t Change Twitter Handle

Similar to changing the profile photo, Twitter Blue users will also lose their ticks if they change their handles. However, after a quick round of review, the tick will be re-enabled as usual.

Don’t Change Username

Just like the handle or the profile photo, Twitter will briefly remove your blue tick if you change your username. Again, as is the case with other factors, after your account is reviewed again, Twitter will reinstate the blue tick.

Don’t Stop Paying

This one’s a no-brainer. But once you subscribe to Twitter Blue, if in case you decide to stop paying the monthly fee, you will lose your blue tick. Those users who still retained the blue ticks from the earlier verification process and decided not to subscribe to Twitter Blue lost their badges in April this year.

Bonus: Get Your Blue Tick Back (Briefly) Without Paying

There’s a fun hack that you can exploit to show off in front of your tick-hungry friends. If you already had a blue tick from earlier and lost your badge for not subscribing to Twitter Blue, you can get it back briefly by making any changes to your bio.

They need not be substantial changes either, just an additional comma is enough. When you do that, your long-lost blue tick will magically reappear beside your profile name. However, the moment you refresh your browser/app, the tick will go away immediately.

This is possibly caused due to a minor glitch on Twitter’s backend, and may not work for all users. It’s still fun to pull a harmless prank, nevertheless.
