When Should One Clear Any App Cache On Android?

Do you know when you should clear your cache? Overdoing it might harm your phone in the long run.

Are you feeling that your Android device has become slower for some strange reason? If you've noticed a slowdown on your Android device recently, there's a simple remedy you can attempt before considering more drastic actions such as factory resets. This involves clearing the cached data accumulated by your apps over time. It's a straightforward procedure that can rejuvenate a sluggish device. Let us see what the process is and in which cases should you do it.

What Is Cache

Cached data, also known as cache files, act like short notes that your apps create temporarily to quickly access frequently used content. For instance, apps like Twitter or X might cache a few posts to prevent launching into an empty feed during network disruptions. Similarly, Netflix caches movie posters to avoid reloading them every time you open the app again.

The concept is to store commonly accessed data locally as cache files instead of starting from scratch with each use. Without cached data, apps would constantly rebuild content from scratch, leading to slower performance. Sacrificing a bit of local storage space for cached data helps maintain smooth app operation.

When Should You Clear Cache

  • Your phone's storage is critically low. Applications such as Google Photos can consume several hundred megabytes of storage, and clearing the cache can provide relief.

  • Apps on your device are crashing frequently.

  • It’s been some time since you last cleared cache and you feel that things are now feeling sluggish.

On the contrary, clearing the cache too frequently can exacerbate issues as it requires apps to repeatedly reconstruct those cache files. This places additional strain on your phone's processing capabilities and battery life.

However, if an app continues to malfunction despite clearing the cache, you have the option to use the "Clear data" button to reset it. Alternatively, you can opt to uninstall and reinstall the app.

How To Clear Cache On Your Android Device

  • Settings > Storage > Tap on the “Apps” entry > A list of everything installed on your phone will be pulled up.
  • Review apps to identify any that have been experiencing issues recently or could benefit from a cleanup > Use the sorting feature to locate apps that are consuming the most cache space.

  • Once you’ve selected an app, tap it and then hit the “Clear Cache” button. This will erase that specific app’s cached files while leaving your actual data and settings untouched.

  • Repeat for other cached-up apps if needed.
