Google Claims AI Search Overviews Sees Over 2 Billion Users Monthly, Pichai Teases Deep Search Mode

Google's AI tools now reach billions, but plans to pour $85 billion into infrastructure have made some investors uneasy.

At Alphabet’s Q2 2025 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai spotlighted how rapidly Google’s AI ecosystem is expanding. From AI-powered summaries in Search to creative tools inside Workspace, nearly every major product under the Google umbrella saw significant usage spikes.

However, not everyone seemed fully reassured. A hefty capital expenditure plan tied to the company’s AI infrastructure left some investors cautious, raising questions about the pace and sustainability of Google’s AI ambitions.

AI Tools See Explosive Growth Across Search and Apps

AI Overviews, Google’s summary feature built into Search, now sees over 2 billion monthly users, a sharp rise from 1.5 billion in May. Google’s standalone Gemini app has also surged to 450 million monthly active users, with daily queries rising more than 50 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Another new feature, AI Mode, which provides a conversational experience within Google Search, has already passed 100 million users, particularly concentrated in India and the US.

Pichai added that AI Mode would soon begin offering Deep Search functionality and more tailored answers, pushing it closer to becoming a full-fledged assistant integrated within Search.

Developers and Creative Users Tap Into Gemini

Beyond Search, Google’s AI capabilities are reaching a growing developer and creator audience. Over 9 million developers have accessed Gemini’s APIs. Meanwhile, the company’s Veo 3 text-to-video model has been used to generate more than 70 million videos since May. Veo also powers Google Vids, a new feature in Workspace that now has nearly 1 million monthly users.

AI-driven tools inside Google Meet are also gaining traction, with over 50 million people having used the platform’s AI-powered note-taking features.

Infrastructure Usage Surges, But Investors Worry

Pichai revealed that backend activity is rising rapidly as well. Monthly token processing jumped from 480 trillion in May to 980 trillion, highlighting the scale at which users are engaging with Google’s AI.

However, Alphabet’s plan to raise capital expenditure to $85 billion, primarily to expand AI data centres and infrastructure, raised some eyebrows. The stock dipped following the announcement, with several analysts voicing concerns about whether the aggressive pace of AI expansion is financially sustainable.
