Xiaomi Resolves Patent Dispute With Seimens, Orange And IP Bridge

Xiaomi on Wednesday announced it has resolved long-standing patent disputes with IP Bridge, Orange and Siemens.

Xiaomi on Wednesday announced it has resolved long-standing patent disputes with IP Bridge, Orange and Siemens through an "innovative patent licensing transaction" to enable efficient licensing of patent rights across multiple technologies from the three companies to Xiaomi.

The deal was facilitated by Novus IP, a company owned by Paul Lin, the former "Head of IP Strategy" at Xiaomi.

“We continue to explore complementary licensing models to the traditional patent pool and bilateral models in order to avoid time-consuming disputes and to focus on innovation,” Ran Xu, General Manager of Global Business Development and IP Strategy, at Xiaomi Group, said in a statement.

“This unique transaction structure lets Xiaomi customers enjoy benefits of inventions from 3 companies, efficiently.” Siemens is a leading technology company focusing on technology with purpose. “For us, protection of innovation by patents is of high importance. We highly welcome this agreement, as it constitutes a mutually very satisfactory solution over litigations and appreciates the solution-oriented approach of all parties involved in the deal,” said Rudolf Freytag, Head of Licensing and Technology Acceleration at Xiaomi.

To recall, Xiaomi started facing issues in the country in April 2022, when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized belonging worth Rs 5,551.27 crores from the company over an alleged violated foreign exchange regulations. The company, however, denied the charge. 

Xiaomi's India unit misled its banker Deutsche Bank for years by claiming it had an agreement for payment of royalties when it had none, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged, according to a report by news agency Reuters. This came within a week of Xiaomi India discontinuing its financial services in the country.
