Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: 5 Reasons Why You Should Consider This Foldable Phone

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 brings significant improvements that bring it closer to traditional flagship devices.

Samsung's latest entry in the foldable phone market, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, arrives at a time of intensely increasing competition in the foldables segment. Samsung had entered the foldables space back in 2019, with the Galaxy Z Fold. Now, in response to the competiton, the South Korean tech giant has responded by creating a slimmer, more robust foldable device, albeit with a higher price tag than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. As someone who prefers compact phones, I've always been skeptical of the trend towards larger devices.

My ideal phone size aligns with the compact dimensions of smartphone models like the standard Samsung Galaxy S23, or the Galaxy S24 and the iPhone 15. (Also read: Is A 6.1-Inch Flagship The Ideal Form Factor). The concept of a foldable phone that expands to a 7.6-inch display initially seemed like overkill to me. While I can appreciate the advantages of a more spacious screen and the enhanced functionality it offers compared to standard smartphones, I've always been an advocate for smaller, more pocket-friendly devices.

However, watching a smartphone unfold is undeniably cool. For those who prioritise screen real estate, without wanting to carry a separate tablet, a foldable fits just right. After all, it is very convenient to unfold a 7-inch+ smartphone than pulling out a tablet from your bag. Foldable phones are increasingly becoming popular, thanks to their versatility -- offering both compact portability and expansive displays, in a single handheld device, and more handset makers are jumping into this bandwagon now.

The new Galaxy Z Fold 6, featuring a book-like design, begins at Rs 164,999 for the entry-level 256GB storage model. Prospective buyers seeking more storage can opt for the 512GB variant which will set them back by Rs 176,999, while the top-tier 1TB model is priced at a whopping Rs 200,999. I used the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for a few days and here are the top five reasons to consider it.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Foldables Don't Have To Be Bulky

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 brings significant improvements that bring it closer to traditional flagship devices. Weighing in at 239 grams, comparable to the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, the Z Fold 6 challenges the notion that foldables must be bulky. The device's design has been refined, and it features a thinner profile now (when closed) and a flat-edge design that gives you more screen real estate. Both the inner and outer displays have 120Hz refresh rate that renders a fluid user experience. However, a bummer is the sharp corners that may occasionally dig into you hands, but the overall design language is sleek and eye-catching.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Multi-Tasking Is A Breeze

Multi-tasking capabilities stand out as a key feature, with the ability to display up to four apps simultaneously on the primary screen. This enhances the device's productivity for both work and leisure activities. I, for example, used it to browse Spotify and take notes at the same time.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Durability A Key Focus

Durability remains Samsung's key focus, with the claimed ability of the display to withstand 200,000 folding cycles. However, the IP48 rating makes it somewhat vulnerable to fine dust particles, making using it in dusty areas.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Clever Innovation In Cameras

Samsung has made camera innovation in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which includes the clever use of rear cameras for high-quality selfies. This intelligent setup will let you capture 50-megapixel self-portraits with ease. In real-world performance, the new device delivers noticeably improved image quality across various shooting scenarios, when compared to Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Samsung seems to have fine-tuned its image processing algorithms and the images had better colour reproduction, dynamic range and detail retention. However, it should be noted that in well-lit environments, there's a slight tendency for the HDR processing to be somewhat aggressive. Moreover, the photos don't feel like a compromise especially when captured by a device that folds.

In fact, this level of imaging, combined with the advantages of a foldable form factor and screen real estate, positions the Galaxy Z Fold 6 as a compelling all-in-one device for those who want both a productivity device with good cameras.

Powered by the top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform and 12GB of RAM, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 delivers smooth performance even when performing multiple tasks. Battery life impresses, with the 4,400mAh cell lasting through a full day of moderate-to-heavy use. I got around 7.5 hours of video playback during my review.
