Apple Set To Launch New Affordable iPhone Tonight. But It Might Not Be 'SE 4'

Apple’s iPhone SE lineup has been traditionally associated with budget-friendly devices that repurpose older iPhone designs, upgrading only internal components. That might not be the case this time.

Apple is gearing up for a new product launch, widely expected to be the fourth-generation iPhone SE. However, recent reports suggest that the device might not bear the SE moniker at all, but instead be introduced as a brand-new model — potentially called the iPhone 16e, as tipped by recent leaks and rumours.

Industry insider Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, reinforced earlier speculation that Apple’s upcoming release may be so different from previous SE models that it warrants a fresh identity.

“Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook announced the event on X last week, saying the company would announce its ‘newest member of the family.’ That seems to imply that the iPhone SE will get a new name and be marketed as a fresh addition to the lineup. Given how drastic the overhaul is to the iPhone SE, a new name makes complete sense,” Gurman explained.

As per Forbes, Apple’s iPhone SE lineup has been traditionally associated with budget-friendly devices that repurpose older iPhone designs, upgrading only internal components like the processor and network capabilities. However, leaks and reports hint that the upcoming model may deviate significantly from this formula.

What Could Be The Specs Of Apple's New iPhone?

While it is rumoured to draw inspiration from the iPhone 14, the new device is expected to feature only a single camera instead of the dual-lens setup found on the iPhone 14. Speculation also surrounds whether it will incorporate Apple’s Dynamic Island, the Camera Control feature, or a customizable Action button—none of which were present in the iPhone 14.

Another key upgrade could be the processor. The upcoming model is reportedly set to feature the A18 chip, expected to power the iPhone 16 series. This move could make the device compatible with Apple Intelligence, further setting it apart from previous SE iterations.

Branding the device under the iPhone 16 series could make sense if these upgrades hold true. A shift away from the SE name could also signal a price hike beyond the current SE model’s $429 price tag, especially considering expected enhancements such as an OLED display and Face ID.

On the other hand, Apple may choose to retain the SE branding due to its longstanding recognition and flexible positioning within the product lineup. Without a number in its name, the SE model has historically remained relevant for years, offering Apple a stable, recognizable entry-level option.

With Apple’s official announcement imminent, the debate over the device’s branding will soon be settled. Whether it remains part of the SE lineup or takes on a new identity, it’s clear that Apple is preparing to shake up its affordable iPhone category in a significant way.
