Elon Musk To Suspend X Accounts Involved In Engagement Farming: Here's What It Means

Engagement farming refers to when someone posts generic or obnoxious content to get likes or replies.

X owner Elon Musk has been troubled with accounts doing engagement farming for some time and now he has decided to strike back at them. Musk has announced that such accounts will be suspended and traced to their source. In a post on X, he said, "Any accounts doing engagement farming will be suspended and traced to source."

Engagement farming in simpler words refers to when someone posts generic or obnoxious content to get likes or replies. The goal is to get people to interact with the tweet, which may lead to followers.

Engagement Farming Explained

Engagement farming is a term used on X to describe when someone posts generic or obnoxious content to get likes or replies. The goal of this activity is to get people to interact with the tweet, which may lead to an increase in the number of followers. The more engagement a tweet gets, the more it appears in Twitter's algorithms, which can help get more eyes on the account.

It works by taking advantage of the algorithmic bias of social media platforms, which prioritise content with higher engagement. The said engagement can come in the form of shares, comments, likes, or any other interaction the platform facilitates. Engagement farmers especially create content that gets the most interaction.

Some people say that engagement farming has transformed X into a battleground dominated by inflammatory remarks or blatantly false information, all in a desperate bid for engagement. One Reddit user says that they've found themselves in a never-ending cycle of muting and blocking these accounts, but each time, it feels like they're trying to empty an ocean with a bucket.

A few examples of this would be:

  • Asking questions, even though you already know the answer, just to get replies

  • Purposely posting controversial topics to start arguments and a lot of back-and-forth

  • Making bold statements and claims without any value just to get reactions

  • Constantly posting polls, contests, etc., to get more engagement

  • Using way too many hashtags and tagging lots of people in hopes of reaching more people (also spammy)

  • Tagging celebrities and influencers in irrelevant posts hoping they'll comment, share, etc.

  • Paying for likes, comments, etc. (don't do this!)
