Apple Acquires This Gen-AI Startup Ahead Of The Launch Of iOS 18 To Compete With Google & Microsoft: Report

Both Google and Microsoft have AI models that can operate on both cloud platforms and devices like smartphones and laptops.

Apple is arriving a bit late in the Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) race than its competitors but it has now started pushing its ambitions and incorporating next-gen technology in upcoming products and its services. The iPhone maker has recently acquired a Canadian artificial intelligence startup named DarwinAI. DarwinAI's focus was on making AI systems smaller and faster. According to a Bloomberg report, sources close to the matter said that Apple purchased the business earlier this year, and dozens of DarwinAI’s employees have already joined the company’s AI division.

The report mentioned that Alexander Wong, an AI researcher previously associated with the University of Waterloo and a key contributor to the development of the business, has transitioned to Apple as a director. Apple's intention behind this move is to leverage the capabilities of DarwinAI's systems for implementing AI directly on devices rather than relying on cloud-based solutions. Additionally, Apple is concentrating on integrating AI technology into manufacturing processes and supply chain management.

The report read, “DarwinAI has developed AI technology for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and serves customers in a range of industries. But one of its core technologies is making artificial intelligence systems smaller and faster. That work could be helpful to Apple, which is focused on running AI on devices rather than entirely in the cloud.”

Both Google and Microsoft have AI models that can operate on both cloud platforms and devices like smartphones and laptops. Google has integrated AI into devices such as the Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, while Microsoft is progressively introducing Copilot capabilities into Windows 11.

Apple's Future Plans With Gen-AI

Regarding Apple's AI initiatives, reports indicate that the company is gearing up to unveil numerous AI-powered services and products at WWDC in June. These announcements may encompass an enhanced version of Siri, AI functionalities integrated into Messages and Apple Music, as well as new features for iPhones.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook hinted at the company's upcoming AI developments during Apple's Q1 earnings call and at its shareholder meeting. He mentioned that Apple plans to make significant advancements in generative AI this year, aiming to pioneer innovative solutions in this domain.
