Security Heightened In Bengal's South 24 Parganas After Two Groups Clash, Cars Set On Fire

Security has been stepped up in Rabindra Nagar, South 24 Parganas after a violent clash near a police station. BJP alleges a Shiva Temple was vandalised; calls out Mamata Banerjee & police inaction

Security has been heightened in Rabindra Nagar, South 24 Parganas, following violent clashes between two groups over disputed land outside the Rabindranagar Police Station. The altercation, reportedly sparked by the setting up of shops on encroached land in Ward No. 7, Maheshtala (under Metiabruz Assembly constituency), escalated rapidly. Stones and bricks were hurled, and a motorcycle was torched amid the chaos. One police official was injured in the stone pelting directed at law enforcement.

BJP Alleges Attack on Religious Sites

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to X to denounce the violence, claiming that the shops were set up on Temple Committee land and that Hindu places of worship were deliberately attacked.

“They violently attacked the sacred Tulsi Manch, nearby Hindu shops, homes, and the Temple itself, when confronted,” Adhikari wrote, sharing visuals from the site. He slammed the police for their alleged inaction: “The Police simply couldn't block the vandals and the entire episode happened in the presence of Police.”

He urged DGP Rajeev Kumar to hold the attackers—and the allegedly negligent officers—accountable, stressing that the Temple premises must be restored and affected residents secured.

'Has Mamata Surrendered?' BJP Leaders Lash Out

BJP’s Priyangu Pandey directly questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s governance: “Is @MamataOfficial running Bengal or surrendering it to radical mobs? We won't stay silent!” he posted, calling the mob a “violent jihadi” group and accusing police of standing by silently during the mayhem.

Agnimitra Paul Condemns 'Systemic Neglect'

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul also condemned the attack, accusing the state of failing its citizens. “The Tulsi altar was desecrated and brutally demolished, and innocent devotees were assaulted and left grievously injured, bloodied by the barbarity of the attack,” she wrote. She demanded swift arrests and strict prosecution of those responsible.

The incident has further deepened political fault lines in West Bengal, with the BJP alleging targeted attacks on the Hindu community, and accusing the administration of failing to uphold law and order.
