SP & BJP Neck-And-Neck in Politically Crucial UP: Akhilesh Party Leads In 34, BJP In 35
UP is India's most politically crucial state, and accounts for 80 of the Lok Sabha's 543 elected MPs.
Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: The Election Commission (EC) trends at 11.40 am show that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) are in a neck-and-neck competition with each other in Uttar Pradesh. While the BJP was seen to be leading in 35 of the state's 80 seats, and the SP in 34.
Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha and is thus the most politically crucial state. The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, is part of the I.N.D.I.A bloc with the Congress. It was founded by former Union minister and UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away in 2022.
Five members of the Yadav family – including Akhilesh and his wife Dimple – are contesting in this election.
While the SP is neck and neck with the BJP in the race for UP, the Congress appears to be improving its tally too. As of 12 noon, the Congress – which got one seat from the state in 2019 – was leading in eight seats. These include Amethi, where the Congress’ Kishori Lal Sharma had a lead of more than 47,000 over Union minister Smriti Irani of the BJP. Irani had unseated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in 2019.
In Uttar Pradesh, the voting spanned all seven phases of the election, which began on April 19 and concluded on June 1.
