New Delhi: A permanent resident of Canada, who had come to India in February earlier this year, was killed allegedly during a brawl with locals during the Hola Mohalla festival at Punjab's Anandpur Sahib, police officials said on Wednesday.

According to a report by news agency ANI, the deceased has been identified as Pradeep Singh (24), hailing from Gazikot Village in Gurdaspur, Punjab.

The family members of the victim said that Pradeep was killed by goons on his way to Mohali.

"He saw a few hooligans playing inappropriate songs in a car in full public view. He tried to reason out with them. But they attacked him and he died on the spot," ANI quoted the family members as saying.

They further demanded stringent action against the accused, police said.

According to police, they are scanning all the viral videos of the incident and urged the people not to believe in rumours.

SSP Mohali said the accused has been identified as Niranjan Singh and further probe on the matter is underway.

SSP Mohali said, "The victim, Pradeep Singh had worn the dress code of Nihangs at the time of the incident. So far he has not been found linked to any Nihang group."
