Waterlogging In Parts Of MP As Rain Batters State, IMD Issues Red Alert. CM Reviews Situation — Top Points

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for western Madhya Pradesh with possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains have inundated parts of Madhya Pradesh since the last two days with the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for western part of the state for Saturday and Sunday. The inclement weather affected the normal life as several places witnessed waterlogging including Ujjain and Indore. On Saturday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan held a meeting with the officials and assessed the situation in the state. Speaking to news agency ANI, Chouhan said the situation is under control and he is in touch with the concerned authorities. 

"I am in touch with the collectors and other officials of the affected areas -Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Alirajpur and Indore due to heavy rainfall,” he said. 

  • The IMD issued a red alert for western Madhya Pradesh for Saturday and Sunday with possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall and advised to avoid areas prone to waterlogging and staying away from vulnerable structures. 
  • South-West Madhya Pradesh is likely to get isolated Heavy to Very heavy with Extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.4 mm) on 16th and 17th September. Exceptionally heavy rainfall (>30 cm) at one or two places over southwest Madhya Pradesh today, the weather department said. 
  • Bhimpur and Sausar in Madhya Pradesh received 45 and 20 centimetres of rainfall, highest over the country, In the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 pm on Saturday, according to the IMD. 
  • The MP CM chaired a meeting with officials to assess the situation. “I am in touch with the collectors and other officials of the affected areas -Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Alirajpur and Indore due to heavy rainfall...The situation is under control. NDRF & SDRF teams are present at the spot,” he said. 
  • “If need be we have decided to call the teams of Airforce and Army...We are hoping that by morning the level of water may reduce...We are continuously monitoring the situation and necessary steps are being taken," he added. 
  • As a precautionary measure, the gates of Indira Sagar Dam and Omkareshwar Dam in Khandwa were opened on Saturday. 
  • Pashupatinath Temple in Mandsaur and temples situated on the banks of river Shipra in Ujjain were inundated due to heavy rainfall.
  • On Saturday, officials in Indore said that over 200 people were rescued from low-lying areas as the city recorded 171 millimetres of rainfall in a 24-hour period ending at 8:30am on Saturday.
