Kolkata: A woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train in Kolkata on Monday afternoon. The incident took place at the Girish Park Metro station in north Kolkata, which led to disruption in the train services on the North-South line, ABP Ananda reported.

Quoting sources, the report said the woman is yet to be identified, and that she jumped in front of a train coming from Dakhineshwar and going to Kabi Subhas station.

Officials said the incident took place at 12.35 pm.

As the woman jumped onto the tracks on Monday on seeing the train coming from Dakhineshwar entering the station, the loco pilot applied emergency brakes to bring the rake to a halt. The train services thereafter remained disrupted for 50 minutes on the Garia-bound Metro line as officials tried to recover the body and clear the tracks.

The services resumed around 1.20 pm after the body was recovered.

Officials said they are trying to identify the woman and find her family members and address, to ascertain what led her to take the extreme step, the ABP Ananda report said. The police also said that they are investigating the matter and checking the CCTV footage for clues.

This is the second time such an incident has taken place since the Metro services resumed after Covid-induced disruption. Incidentally, the suicide happened on a day Kolkata got a new line on its Metro network. The Sealdah-Sector 5 sector on the East-West corridor was inaugurated on Monday after a long wait.
