Karnataka: Heavy Rains Disrupt Normal Life In Udupi, Dakshina Kannada Districts

Waterlogging was also reported on a section of National Highway 66 between Puttur in Udupi and Kolalagiri Road.

Torrential rains continued to batter Udupi district on Tuesday, causing significant disruptions to daily life. Several low-lying areas, including Karkala, Kundapur, Thekkatte, Hirgana, Basruru, Barkuru, Nitturu, Kaup, and Udyavara, remained submerged under knee-deep water. Many roads were either blocked or rendered impassable, according to local officials.

Waterlogging was also reported on a section of National Highway 66 between Puttur in Udupi and Kolalagiri Road. The heavy rains led to a car driver misjudging the depth of the water and driving into a bog near the Kannarpady-Kadekaru link road within the Udupi rural police station limits. All four passengers managed to escape safely, and the vehicle was later recovered by Fire department personnel with the assistance of local residents.

In the neighboring Dakshina Kannada district, heavy to very heavy rainfall persisted, affecting areas like Mangaluru, Puttur, Bantwal, Belthangady, Sullia, and the ghat section of the Gundya-Shirady sector. The continuous downpour resulted in traffic jams on various stretches of road. The district administration issued a 'Red Alert' on Tuesday, leading to the closure of schools and PU colleges.

Qatar Airways Goa-Bound Flight Diverted To Bengaluru

Additionally, a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Goa was diverted to Bengaluru early Tuesday due to poor visibility at the Manohar International Airport (MIA) in Goa. The flight (QR522) arrived from Doha but was unable to land at MIA around 1.50 am due to low visibility. After circling the airport for 15-20 minutes, the aircraft was redirected to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red alert' for North and South Goa districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with strong surface winds on Tuesday. This alert follows heavy showers in Goa on Monday.

The relentless rains have emphasized the need for preparedness and effective response mechanisms to mitigate the impact on affected communities.
