Delhi University Reopening: DU Yet To Take A Call On When To Reopen College Campus, Hostels

For a long time, there have been demands from several student organisations to reopen campuses of various colleges affiliated to the Delhi University.

New Delhi: In the light of calls for reopening of college campuses, officials of the Delhi University said that they have decided to wait for a few more weeks before taking a decision on this regard.

Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said DU's case is "very different".

"Our situation is very different because we have a lot of students coming from other states. Some states are still reporting many Covid-19 cases and opening of the college campuses would mean that students from such states will have to travel to Delhi. As far as schools are concerned, their situation is different because most of the students there are locals. We'll wait a few more weeks before taking any decision," he told Times of India.

For a long time, there have been demands from several student organisations to reopen campuses of various colleges affiliated to the Delhi University. However, the university has not been able to arrive at any decision citing the fear of Covid.

The accommodation of outstation students in the hostel is another problem as most of them have shared rooms. While some of the college principals are waiting for detailed guidelines to be issued by DU, some say that it is very unlikely that colleges will reopen for all courses.

Quoting DU Dean of Students Welfare Rajiv Gupta, the ToI report said: "At present, many MPhils, PhDs and postgraduate students are living in university hostels. Most hostels are making sure that new admissions are not processed currently and therefore, undergraduate students are not admitted. We'll wait for a few more weeks so that there is some clarity on the situation."
