World Athletics Championships: Avinash Sable Fails To Qualify For Final Round In 3000m Steeplechase In Shocking Result

Avinash Sable, who underwent extensive training abroad supported by the Sports Ministry's funding, had prepared extensively for this prestigious event.

Budapest: Avinash Sable, the national record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, experienced a disheartening setback as he failed to secure a spot in the final round of the World Athletics Championships. The unexpected turn of events occurred during his heat race, leaving him with a disappointing seventh-place finish.

Sable, who underwent extensive training abroad supported by the Sports Ministry's funding, had prepared extensively for this prestigious event. Moreover, he was granted an exemption from participating in domestic competitions to focus on his preparations. Despite these efforts, he crossed the finish line in his heat with a time of 8 minutes and 22.24 seconds, landing in the seventh position.

In this competition, only the top five performers from each of the three heats advance to the final round. Given the cutthroat nature of the sport at this level, Sable's performance unfortunately did not secure him a spot in the coveted final round.

Expectations were high for Sable's performance, with hopes of at least reaching the finals, if not contending for a medal. However, the result fell far short of these aspirations, leading to a sense of disappointment among the Indian contingent.

It's worth noting that Sable holds the national record in the 3000m steeplechase, with an impressive time of 8 minutes and 11.20 seconds. This accomplishment had positioned him as a strong contender and a hopeful prospect for a commendable performance at the World Athletics Championships.

Notably, India have won only two mdeals to date in the history of this marquee event since 1983. While Sable was being looked upon as a strong contender who could have had a chance to add to that tally, his debalce is an early dent to India's hopes. Neeraj Chopra remains the country's strongest medal hope after having won a silver in the men's javelin throw event at last year's World Athletics Championships in Eugene.
