Djokovic had a tremendous 2023 as not only he surpassed every other male tennis player to have the most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, he did all of it without even breaking his rhythm or looking rusty as he looked as good as a 25-26 year old professional Tennis player. It is so because the 36-year old made it to the Final of every Grand Slam and won every final except the Wimbledon Final, where the young sensation Carlos Alcaraz saw off the Serbian in a highly entertaining match.
It is one of the rarest sights ever in Tennis and to do so at such an elderly age makes it even more astonishing, comprehensive, and as Gary Neville famously said during his commentary in the 2012 UEFA Champions League semi-final 2nd leg match between Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona at the iconic Camp Nou in Barcelona, after Fernando Torres skipped past Victor Valdes and scored, "Un...be...lievable".
United Cup 2024
Djokovic maintains his purple patch of form as he defeated Jiri Lehecka 6-1 6-7 6-1 at United Cup and makes it 1-1 for Serbia against Czechia. Speaking after the match, Djokovic, in his first match of 2024, acknowledged the lively crowd and tennis fans in the post-match conference on-court.
“Happy new year everyone. Thank you for choosing to come watch tennis the first days of the new year. We appreciate that very much. Obviously, Australia loves sports & loves tennis. Perth has always been a great place to play. This is one of the nicest arenas I’ve ever played in. Thank you for coming & supporting both players,” said Djokovic.
